Maths-Challenge

Brampton College is always pleased to recognise student success and already this year we have a lot to celebrate! Our students have just finished their mocks and many of them are making their final choices for university. So far, our leavers have over 572 offers to consider and 330 of these are from Russell group universities.

Celebrating Success
In our recent assembly we were delighted to distribute awards given to our students for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads as well as the UK Mathematics challenge.

These Olympiads are longstanding competitions, for example the British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) has run for 25 years and is entered annually by over 1,600 talented young physicists. The examination-based competition has a dual purpose: to challenge and reward the best physicists in British schools and to select the UK Physics Team for competition at international level. Congratulations to our students for being part of this cohort.

The UK Chemistry Olympiad is an extremely challenging competition, open to all schools in the UK. Students must be aged 16 or over as questions are predominantly aimed at year 13 students (or equivalent). The competition is designed to ’stretch and challenge’.

The British Biology Olympiad challenges and stimulates students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. It enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognised by the award of medals, certificates and other prizes. It is hoped that competing in the Olympiad will encourage students already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject to continue their study beyond A level. All medal winners will be invited to an awards ceremony at the Royal Institution on Thursday 7th July.

Joyce Kam won silver awards in both Biology and Chemistry Olympiads. An amazing achievement!

UK Mathematics challenge sees the top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate. Top performing students are then invited to take part in follow on rounds and the very best can represent their country in the International Mathematical Olympiad. This year we were pleased to congratulate Matan Hamburger won a Gold award and Best in School in the Maths Challenge and a commendation in the Physics Olympiad.
We were also pleased to recognise Kate Cornell’s achievements in French and award Sara Greenbourne the English PIE award. They were praised for their commitment and the quality of their work.
This award ceremony came just after students had completed their mock examinations. For some, success can come quickly and easily for most it is the result of perseverance, determination and hard work. We reminded the students of some very successful people including: Soichiro Honda, Stephen Speilburg and Lionel Mesi who achieved success after experiencing setbacks and disappointment. Thomas Edison, a famous inventor said “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.” He said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work!” He summerises this saying “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”.
