Joe Biden has been elected 46th president of the United States after four years of Donald Trump’s problematic presidency. Biden won the presidency after a long-lasting vote count of Pennsylvania giving him 20 votes. Biden gave a victory speech in his home state, Delaware, in which he stated “I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but to unify.” This quote directly contrasts with Trump’s racist and anti-feminist views which allowed Biden to win the votes of people of colour and women as well as the LGBTQ+ community. Biden’s Vice President, Kamala Harris, is also the first women of colour to serve in her new-founded position.
Although Biden won, Trump has made claims of voter fraud. However, he has provided no evidence for the conspiracy and they have been described as ‘baseless.’ Biden, at 77, will be the oldest president in US history. Trump had no political background before his 2016 election, however Biden has a history in politics with his vice presidency for 8 years under president Barack Obama. This experience is sure to help with issues such as COVID-19, the racial inequalities as well as the friction between the US and the Middle-East.
In recent events, there was a phone call between Georgia’s top election official, Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensoerger, the president’s lawyer and other high ranking Georgian officials. During the phone call, Trump listed ways in which the votes were tampered with including what, he claimed, was 5000 deceased people voting. However, an investigation into this led to only two cases of this. ‘I just want to find 11,780 votes’ (the margin needed to overtake Biden), Trump said. This quotation has been claimed to be against Congress and immoral of the president leading to an impeachment. Georgia had counted its vote three times which resulted with similar results. Trump, however, remained persistent in the hour-long call which only led to the state’s officials contradicting all of his claims and ultimately not coming to the president’s wanted outcome. All in all, Joe Biden took to office in January and was sworn in after riots in the capital in support of Trump.
