Matthew joined Brampton College on our GCSE course and quickly discovered a passion that would shape his creative future. He progressed on to take A level Photography, and he soon developed a distinctive visual language rooted in documentary photography, youth culture and fashion.
His photographic journey began with street photography, drawing inspiration from the vibrant scenes of 1960s Hong Kong captured by Fan Ho. From there, he explored the raw honesty of 1990s grunge diary photography through the work of Corinne Day, before examining Ryan McGinley’s celebrated portraits of youth, freedom and identity.
These influences helped Matthew develop a personal style that reflects his Hong Kong heritage and his interests in fashion, music and contemporary culture. His work is characterised by striking colour grading, using vivid tones and bold contrasts alongside overexposed black and white imagery, where faces and figures become almost ghostly and abstract. This distinctive approach creates photographs that feel personal, honest and distinctly his own.
This autumn, Matthew will continue his studies at London College of Fashion, part of UAL, joining one of the world’s leading environments for fashion photography. LCF has helped shape a new generation of creative talent, including photographers such as Coco Capitán, whose work has influenced contemporary fashion and culture, alongside established names such as Rankin. Matthew looks forward to developing his photographic voice within a community of designers, stylists and photographers at the forefront of the industry.
