Non-realism, ‘The Sea of Faith’

Philosophy & Ethics students will be familiar with the notion of non-realism. Based on the ideas of the later Ludwig Wittgenstein, non-realism was further developed by the Cambridge philosophical theologian, Don Cupitt. In the early 1980s, Cupitt founded a movement called the ‘Sea of Faith’ – the name of which was which was taken from Matthew Arnold’s famous poem, “Dover Beach”. The ‘Sea of Faith’ Movement has since grown into an international movement. It plans to hold its annual conference in London in the autumn, and its key speakers will be Stephen Batchelor, Richard Holloway, and, of course, Don Cupitt himself.
