Our GCSE Physics class has been learning about static electricity using a Van de Graaff generator. This uses a moving rubber belt to generate static by rubbing against rollers, much like rubbing a balloon on your hair. The static electricity is collected on a metal dome, which can create small sparks or even make your hair stand on end when touched.
