A student review of theatre production, ‘Kyoto’

Posted: 30th April 2025

On Monday, 24th March, a small group of students and staff attended a performance of “Kyoto” at the new Soho Place Theatre. First Year Student, Cassandra shares her views of the production:

Last week, I had the pleasure to see ‘Kyoto’ at Soho Place and it was way more intense than I expected—in the best way possible. It takes something as complicated as climate negotiations and turns it into a full-on political thriller, packed with tension, power struggles, and backroom deals that feel way too real. The story throws you right into the chaos of the 1997 UN summit, where world leaders, scientists, and lobbyists are all fighting to get what they want, making sneaky deals and switching sides when it suits them. The dialogue is fast, sharp, and actually gripping, and the lighting shifts between harsh, bright conference-room scenes and darker, more secretive moments, makes everything feel even more dramatic. It’s smart, tense, and honestly way too relevant for comfort—easily one of the most exciting plays I’ve seen. If you get the chance, go see it.
