Fieldwork in Action: Geography Students Explore River Dynamics and Urban Change

Posted: 11th November 2025

🗺️ GCSE Geography Students Investigate Dollis Brook

On Friday 3rd October, our GCSE geographers embarked on a hands-on field trip to Dollis Brook to assess how closely the river aligns with the Bradshaw Model. Equipped with measuring tapes and flow meters, students gained practical experience in recording width, depth, and velocity at various points along the river. Their findings confirmed that overall discharge increased downstream—just as the model predicts.

Despite the 10-kilometre trek between the upper and lower courses, spirits remained high. Students also took time to sketch key landforms, deepening their understanding of fluvial processes through direct observation.

🏙️ A Level Students Explore Studentification in Stratford

On Thursday 9th October, First Year A level students turned their attention to urban geography with a visit to Stratford. Their mission: to investigate the impact of studentification on the area’s economic and social landscape.

Demonstrating impressive initiative, the group developed their own research methodology, incorporating questionnaires, interviews, non-participant observations, digital photography, perception appraisals, and bespoke studentification surveys. After a well-earned lunch break at Westfield, students concluded that Stratford has undergone moderate changes due to its growing student population.

These two enriching fieldwork experiences not only brought classroom theory to life but also showcased our students’ enthusiasm, analytical skills, and commitment to geographical inquiry.
