Switching Off: Simple Ways to Unwind and Recharge

Posted: 27th January 2026

Life at Brampton can be busy and demanding, especially when deadlines, revision and future plans start to pile up. While hard work is important, so is taking time to switch off. Learning how to relax effectively isn’t a luxury — it’s an essential part of staying focused, healthy and motivated. Building small moments of calm into your routine can make a big difference to your wellbeing and your ability to perform at your best.

One effective way to unwind is through deep breathing exercises. Techniques such as box breathing or the 4-7-8 method can help calm your nervous system, slow your heart rate and reduce feelings of stress. These exercises only take a few minutes and can be done anywhere — before bed, between revision sessions or whenever you feel overwhelmed.

Reading is another great way to relax, especially when it involves a physical book rather than a screen. Stepping into a different world through a novel, biography or even poetry can give your mind a break from academic pressures and help you wind down at the end of the day.

Many students also find journaling helpful. Writing down your thoughts, feelings or even a few things you’re grateful for can help clear your mind and process emotions. It doesn’t have to be long or perfect — just honest. Getting thoughts out of your head and onto paper can be surprisingly calming.

Listening to calming music or ambient sounds can also help you relax. Gentle playlists, nature sounds or instrumental music can create a peaceful atmosphere, whether you’re resting, stretching or preparing for sleep.

Light movement, such as stretching or gentle yoga, is another excellent way to release tension built up during long periods of sitting or studying. Even a few simple stretches can help your body feel more relaxed and grounded.

Finally, a warm bath or shower can be a powerful signal to your body that it’s time to slow down. The warmth relaxes muscles and can help prepare you for a better night’s sleep.

Remember, taking care of your wellbeing isn’t time wasted — it’s time invested in yourself. Finding what helps you unwind will support both your mental health and your academic success.

New Principal Appointment

After what will be six years with the college, our Principal, John Wilson, will be leaving us at the end of the current academic year to take up a new role at a school in Central London. We wish John well and thank him for his exceptional service and contribution to the college and his commitment to our students.

We are delighted to announce that Emma Bell, former Head of St James Senior Girls’ School, has been appointed as Principal and will take over from John in August this year.
