Brampton Year 12 students recently visited Middlesex University to take part in the ‘Teach the Teacher’ scheme, delivering a presentation to trainee teachers on the importance of embedding climate change across all subjects.
Driven by their passion for sustainability, our students worked in a team to create an interactive and thought-provoking presentation, combining research, creativity, and humour to show how small changes can make a meaningful difference. Their session sparked lively discussion and questioning from the trainee teachers.
One history trainee raised the challenge of linking climate change to medieval history. The students responded by explaining how wool production was geographically limited, leading to greater reliance on cattle and goats — animals that release methane, a greenhouse gas — demonstrating how environmental themes can be meaningfully connected to historical content. They also suggested creative adaptations in mathematics, such as framing problem-solving questions around climate-change scenarios rather than traditional examples, helping students feel involved in real-world issues.
The PGCE coordinator praised the group, stating:
“We were truly impressed by the depth of their input, clarity of delivery, and the way they connected with the content. They were all teachers in the making!”
Our students also greatly enjoyed the experience. One reflected:.
“It was genuinely a valuable experience and a stepping stone for me to become more confident talking to an audience that’s outside my everyday norm.”
