Looking for a proven way to boost your memory and ace your exams? Flashcards are one of the most effective study tools—and when used correctly, they can transform your revision sessions.

Every fortnight, we share a wellbeing or study tip on the Student Google Classroom. On 6th October, our focus was on flashcards—a simple yet powerful technique for active recall and spaced repetition.

Why Flashcards Work

Flashcards aren’t just mini notes—they’re memory power tools. They help you engage with the material, test yourself, and strengthen long-term retention.

How to Create Flashcards

  • Front: One clear question
  • Back: One clear answer
Include key facts, formulae, vocabulary, quotes, dates, or diagrams.

Organize Your Cards

Sort them into three piles:

  • Red: Don’t know
  • Amber: Know a bit
  • Green: Know well

Revise Smarter

If you’re revising for 1 hour:

  • 30 mins on red
  • 20 mins on amber
  • 10 mins on green

Top Tips

  • Make flashcards as you go—not just before exams.
  • Use apps like Anki or Quizlet for spaced repetition.

💡 Remember: “Memory is the residue of thought.” The more you think about something, the better you remember it!

New Principal Appointment

After what will be six years with the college, our Principal, John Wilson, will be leaving us at the end of the current academic year to take up a new role at a school in Central London. We wish John well and thank him for his exceptional service and contribution to the college and his commitment to our students.

We are delighted to announce that Emma Bell, former Head of St James Senior Girls’ School, has been appointed as Principal and will take over from John in August this year.
