Brampton College’s Modern Languages department continues to thrive, offering students a rich and immersive experience that goes far beyond the classroom. With a strong emphasis on cultural engagement and real-world application, the college’s French A level course has been flourishing, both academically and in student enthusiasm!
A recent highlight was the French cinema trip on 9th December, where French A level students visited the Institut Français and the Cine Lumière in South Kensington. They watched The Most Precious of Cargoes, a 2024 animated film by acclaimed director Michel Hazanavicius. Set in war-torn Poland, the film explores themes of love, humanity, and resilience — offering students a powerful lens through which to deepen their understanding of French language and culture.
Before the screening, students sampled traditional French snacks from a local bakery, adding a sensory layer to the cultural experience. After the film, they gathered at the Gazette café inside the Institut Français for a feedback session. Over soft drinks, they discussed their impressions of the film and drew thoughtful comparisons with the French movie they study as part of their A level syllabus.
Trips like these are a key part of Brampton’s approach to language learning — making it dynamic, relevant, and inspiring. Students consistently achieve excellent results, and many go on to study languages at top universities. The department’s success lies in its ability to combine rigorous academic teaching with opportunities to explore language in context.
The cinema trip sparked a renewed interest in French film and culture among the students, who found it refreshing to learn in a different environment. Experiences like this reinforce Brampton’s commitment to nurturing not just linguistic ability, but a genuine appreciation for the richness of global cultures.
